How much is sickness absence really costing your
organisation?

It’s sobering to consider how health problems can drain your corporate energy.

Currently, according to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the annual cost of sickness absence is £11.6 billion, or £495 per employee with the additional impact of hidden costs considerably more - a quick calculation will tell you how big a burden this could be for you.

Added to this, you have to comply with increased legislation, the growing threat of litigation and the persistent headache of recruitment and retention problems.

In such a climate, optimising the health and wellbeing of your workforce is not an optional extra - it’s a prerequisite for success.

Why introduce this service?

  • It has been observed that employees who have sustained a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) or are suffering from extreme anxiety/stress can wait for up to 20 weeks for NHS treatment.
  • Once an employee has been on sickness absenteeism for more than six weeks, the problem is often compounded and the chances of returning to work at all are significantly reduced.
  • Acute conditions can become chronic with some individuals suffering pain, distress and often deformity awaiting treatment.
  • Employees who are suffering from a MSD or extreme anxiety /stress who choose to keep working may be unable to fully perform their role and some need to reduce their duties/hours worked – impacting the overall effectiveness of the business.
  • Reduced effectiveness in terms of loss of experienced staff, potential overtime and agency staff as well as the other members of the team picking up additional duties.

How the service will work?

Setting up your own Health @ Work Service couldn't be easier.

We aim to make the process as streamlined and straightforward as possible for both the Employee and Employer alike and our skilled and experienced team will work with you to help achieve this.   With your business culture and your business priorities in mind, we will aim to resolve even the most difficult and sensitive cases, where fitness to work is an issue.

Getting your employee back as quickly and safely as possible is vital and early intervention is essential. The Corporate Health @ Work service aims to work with employees at the early stages or those on prolonged sickness absence due to a MSD or stress disorder where it is affecting their wellbeing and ability to perform their duties.

Where an employee has sustained an MSD or are suffering from stress which has resulted in a sickness absence, there will normally be an internal referral to the Occupational Health team or equivalent, an assessment will be carried out and a request made for a referral to the Corporate Health @Work partnership at the Body in Balance Health Clinic.  Once identified, employees can be offered an appointment and commence treatment normally within 48/72 hours.  We offer extended opening hours, including early & late evenings on a Monday to Friday basis.

If required, a member of our specialised team can operate from the employer’s premises, ensuring a fast and efficient on-site service.

A full assessment is carried out and the employee’s capabilities and satisfaction are recorded in relation to the MSD or the stress disorder using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM).  A final assessment is completed at discharge again using the COPM forms.  These provide an excellent valuation tool for the effectiveness of the treatment and can be used to validate our success of returning your employee safely to work.

Delivery of the Treatment

Our approach is consistent regardless if we are working on-site at the employer’s premises or having your employee visit us within the Body in Balance Health Clinic.

Our professional, skilled practitioners will deliver a treatment plan specific to the individuals needs based on a bodywork technique, Bowen Therapy- see attached Bowen form– and Emotional Freedom Technique & Life Coaching – our stress busting techniques. As well as tackling the presenting issue, work will be done with the client to identify and address the root cause of their condition. How these factors can be reduced or eliminated to prevent further conditions or potentially having to take further time off work will be identified and resolved.

Our skilled and experienced team will work with you, in the context of your business culture and with your business priorities in mind, to resolve even the most difficult and sensitive cases, especially where fitness to work is an issue.

Following the Treatment

Following the course of treatment, feedback is compiled in conjunction with the employee and a report is issued to the Occupational Health Manager or designated in-house case manager, detailing the outcome of the treatment.

We will report in:

·        Change in mobility

·        Change / reduction in discomfort

·        Change in stress/anxiety

·        No treatments delivered

·        Completed COPM report

to enable the OH department to assist the employee’s return to work safely or to make an informed decision to any adjustment to the employees task or role at work.
